Hello, Microsoft Nonprofit Team. My name is Damon House, and as an alumnus of Microsoft, I'm very aware of your mission to support nonprofit businesses. I have created THIS page to explain my nonprofit WITHOUT setting up an entirely new website BECAUSE I look forward to hosting my website on Azure through your program.
In a country where economic disparities persist, our vision is to empower underserved communities, particularly communities of color. We propose developing a network of interconnected innovation and entrepreneurship centers at Historically Black College and University (HBCU) and Minority Serving Institution (MSI) campuses to address historical inequalities through research & commercialization. Under the banner of Innovation MINDSET* HUBs (Historically Underrepresented Businesses), we seek to change the outlook for our institutions, businesses, and communities.
MINDSET = Mentoring, Innovation, and Networking for Diversity in Student Entrepreneurship and Technology
Founded in October 2023, the Innovation MINDSET Alliance is a nonprofit that can access technology, grants, and partnerships. We work together with HBCUs and MSIs to establish a long-term enablement journey roadmap “past the Capability Statement.”
By focusing on Education & Engagement, Innovation & Commercialization, and Acceleration & Entrepreneurship, we will work with institutions to build the research Capacity, Capability, and Accountability to transform our communities for the digital economy.
As a 509(a)(2) certified nonprofit under the IRS, our alliance seeks to create a basis upon which we can change the MINDSET for our schools and our communities. Through the support of our partners and stakeholders, we will:
Our team is our greatest asset. Consisting of a Board of Advisors with seats for HBCU / MSI executives, foundational partners, and municipal partners, our core team boasts a combined 200 years of experience in education, entrepreneurship, and community development. We have also gathered a diverse group of advisors who bring valuable expertise.
The economic power of the minority community here in the US is staggering at over $5T spent annually – e.g., Latinx / Hispanic Americans ($1.9T), African Americans ($1.7T), Asian Americans ($1.3T), and Native / Indigenous Americans ($123B). The direct impact of minority-owned businesses is over $140B annually with over 700K jobs, with an indirect impact of $116B and an induced impact of $145B. The annual economic impact of Historically Black Colleges and University (HBCU) graduates is $15B, with an employment impact of 134K jobs and total lifetime earnings of $130B.
While these numbers are difficult to deny, investment and capital remain elusive within communities of color. HBCUs and other Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) receive a fractional percentage of research and investment funding. Additionally, minority founders receive on average 1% of investment funding compared with their majority counterparts.
The Innovation MINDSET Alliance is a collaborative initiative designed to address the gaps in our institutions and improve our capacity, capability, and accountability to research and innovate. Through our partners, we will establish a level playing field where all students and founders, regardless of race, gender, or other factors, have equal opportunities to design and launch products & solutions that will change the world. The time has come to address these inequities by transforming the landscapes through education, innovation, and acceleration.
Programs should be deployed within institutions with tools and assets that are accessible and easy for partners & communities to tailor. They should be developed to align with existing institution strengths and allow for the training of students & residents in line with the skills and opportunities needed for the market. Each center should have one cohesive look and feel while embracing the unique voice and flavor of the institution and surrounding community / region.
R&D is one of the key connectors between industries and the market. Through a roadmap of research, we can challenge students & entrepreneurs to envision large challenges and incorporate design thinking to create new solutions. Technology capabilities and governance practices enable innovators and founders to rebuild lost confidence and trust in research and institutions.
Innovation and the creation of new solutions & businesses lead to increased market penetration and opportunities. With those opportunities must also come access to capital and the mentorship that drives success. The outcomes from these innovation activities and the subsequent intellectual property will lead to the creation of new businesses and market opportunities around minority participation in the digital economy.
Innovation Alliance partners will include local, regional, and national organizations committed to advancing the Capacity, Capability, and Accountability of research & commercialization, including corporations and Federal agencies. Marketing will address activation and engagement strategies across students, faculty, institutions, and communities, including structured learning tracks aligned to the digital skill levels of the program participants.
The Innovation MINDSET Alliance and Our PMO Model:
HBCUs will provide an assessment with a thorough breakdown of their:
The Creative Economy encompasses a broad range of industries and activities related to culture, arts, and creativity. It plays a vital role in supporting historically underserved and underrepresented communities by offering economic opportunities and enabling entrepreneurship through innovation. Our nonprofit also examines the role of the creative economy (also called the Orange Economy) in the context of innovation focusing on components including music, arts, fashion, media, and gastronomy.
The Innovation MINDSET Alliance is a nonprofit that can access technology, grants, and partnerships. Our nonprofit will operate with individual chapters (HUBs) across the country, with international deployments later. Our deployment models will include an overlay option for institutions with existing innovation / entrepreneurship centers, modernization projects where existing centers require additional updates, and the development of new centers.
